The tempo is the Super Eagles’ Paris camp was revved up a notch yesterday when London-based Alex Iwobi and Ola Aina arrived to join their mates in preparing for Thursday’s friendly game against Togo.
With Iwobi and Aina in town, the number of players in the camp preparing for the June 1 friendly match against the Hawks of Togo in France in now 19.The Eagles, who forced the national team of the Island of Corsica to a 1-1 draw during the first friendly at Ajaccio, will start heading back to Nigeria to begin final preparations for the 2019 AFCON qualifying match against South Africa in Uyo on June 10.
According to reports from France, Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi and Olarewaju Kayode arrived in the camp shortly before Iwobi and Aina made their entrance.
Manchester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, who scored the Eagles’ equaliser against Corsica last Friday, left the camp for London, where he is expected to complete his move to West Ham United, which has indicated interest in the top finisher.
The players will continue their battle for selection by the Technical Adviser, Gernot Rohr, who is expected to release a fresh list for the Eagles AFCON qualifier against South Africa.
Reports indicate that the Eagles will have a short break after the June 10 game against South Africa before reconvening for the Russia 2018 back to back games against Cameroun in late August and early September.
Ideye Favoured to Get Eagles Nod Ahead of Ighalo
Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has been considering which of the two strikers he will invite from China for the AFCON showdown.
An said: “It looks very much like Ideye will be the only player from China for the match against South Africa.
“The coach needs an experienced striker to be part of his very youthful front line.”
Both strikers, who have featured in the Premier League in England, have scored two goals each in the Chinese league this season, but Ideye has been a lot more convincing in an Eagles shirt than former Watford star Ighalo.
Eagles Camp Report – Musa Misses Session, Ndidi Shines As Onyekuru Finally Comes Alive
Only 16 players took part in the session including the two goalkeepers as Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa is out injured after picking up a knock in last Friday’s friendly against Corsica which ended 1-1.
After the traditional warm up and ball works, the players did tactical drills which suggest the coach is already perfecting strategies for the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers game against South Africa in Uyo next month.
Due to confidential purposes we won’t be revealing the various drills done by the team, but during the session Leicester City Wilfred Ndidi was once again the star man in training.
His willingness to hit long range shots impressed Rohr who was also visibly pleased with the contributions of Oghenekaro Etebo and Chidozie Awaziem during the session.
However the good news during the session has to be the form of Henry Onyekuru who had a not too impressive showing against Corsica, but showed his true mettle in today’s session.
Onyekuru who scored 24 goals for modest Belgium side Eupen found his scoring touch and finished with aplomb in the goal scoring drills done by the team.
