Labour former prime minister Tony Blair said: “This is absolutely tragic. Such a pointless and savage act of hatred contradicts everything Jo lived for and worked for. “She was a servant of others all her life, thought of others first and was committed to making their lives better. She is a huge loss to British politics. My heart goes out to Brendan and their children. They’re in all our thoughts and prayers this night.”

CEmbbR3WMAIrRyKMs Cox’s husband Brendan issued  a statement upon learning of her death. This is the statement in full, which has attracted emotional responses from many MPs: “Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo’s friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo.

“Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it everyday of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people. She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her.

“Hate doesn’t have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous. Jo would have no regrets about her life, she lived every day of it to the full.”

We understand that Ms Cox was treated briefly at the scene being she was taken to a hospital in Leeds city centre. She was taken into accident and emergency then straight into surgery. We understand she has now had surgery but her condition remains critical. We expect to be told more in the coming minutes when the West Yorkshire Police hold a news conference.
